Anime Script & Series Bible Translation

This is a series for which the first season has already been produced. I coordinated translation for it and now that the second season is in development/pre-production, I've been hired back to translate scripts, character descriptions and series info to be used for the second season pre-buy/pre-license pitches.

Currently in progress. Production scheduled to begin late 2010/early 2011.

I'm supervising the translation of this series, directing the pilot episodes for the distributors in European territories and am scheduled to oversee the production of the English language version.

Currently broadcasting in Japan, currently pending sales in Ireland, United Kingdom, France and possibly other territories.

As creative coordinator on this project, I'm handling communication between the artists at [the Japanese animation studio in Tokyo] and the [US Creator] during the development of this project. It's a lot of translating, reviewing materials like storyboards, scripts, character and BG designs, especially to be sure that the final show will agree with the [US Network]'s Standards & Practices for broadcast.

producing a CG animated short

As producer on this project, I'm helping to block out the schedule and human resource needs for this short. There's no shortage of great talent, and the budget is practical/realistic, but we are a little tight on free time given how busy everyone involved can be.

assisting localizers in Japan

I'm translating and helping communication between [the animation studio in Canada] and [the recording studio in Japan] where the Japanese dubbing is going on. Fortunately both studios are very streamlined and all the materials so far have been on time. This show is one of my favorite projects to work on and it will be airing on a major network in conjunction with a decent campaign to build character recognition.

localizing an animated OAV

As a producer, I'm helping coordinate the English language version (dubbing and subtitling) for the this direct DVD short series. That includes adapting the ADR scripts (with the help of a British consultant, because [the JP Studio] Production Committee wants all the characters in the dub to speak with British accents!) plus things like voice casting, assisting the producers from Japan when they come and a bit of voice directing.

This will be a challenge because we're in charge of the English dub, but the animation itself isn't completed yet! How will we match lip sync to lips that don't move yet? Just you wait and see :D

Scheduled to be released on DVD in Japan early 2007.

translating & adapting a one shot manga

I'm translating/adapting this book in between others for the same publisher and it's enjoyable, although finding parallel internet metaphors for all of this jargon takes more thought than the average shojo manga I've taken on before. Overall it's going well!

translating & adapting a serial manga

Format: manga series, from [a major weekly magazine] still in publication in Japan (could be headed for more than 30 volumes, who knows \o_O/)

I'm translating and adapting/editing this series, which has gained a lot of popularity since it was licensed in North America. Unfortunately, the first few volumes were edited/altered and lettered elsewhere (by very busy staff members who couldn't read the original Japanese), and so had some errors & censoring that some fans noticed right away.

HOWEVER thankfully that extra attention pushed the publisher to allow for a more literal translation and convinced them to not change my favorite character's favorite catchphrase. Now the team is well-oiled and I'm happy to be part of this feat of localization (from book 04 on)!

Scheduled to be available anywhere manga in English is sold starting Spring 2006.
Scheduled to be completed: whenever the series is completed in Japan.
